Director and Managing Trial Attorney

The position will manage attorneys and support staff for one of the Company’s In-House Coverage Firm Law Offices, including the oversight of all personnel, training, administrative, and work product tasks. Reports directly to the Coverage Firm’s Senior Managing Attorney. The position also has ongoing relationship and accountability for the assignments of clients and business units being served. This attorney is a litigation and coverage expert in one or more areas of the Firm’s business. In addition to management responsibilities, the position’s work assignments may consist of major legal tasks involving coverage issues / litigation with the highest degree of difficulty and facts / law that are often in question for which considerable legal judgment, experience and independent reasoning are required. Will often require working with or the guidance of other office attorneys and staff. Requires significant experience in general/coverage litigation. This is a litigation trial attorney.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities


1. Managing attorneys and support staff of an In-House Coverage Firm Law Office.

2. Supervises, trains, mentors as needed office attorneys and para-professionals with respect to assignments and general coverage knowledge.

3. Creates procedures designed to maximize the offices’ volume, efficiency and success in handling all litigation and non-litigation assignments.

4. Works with the Firm’s Senior Managing Attorney in the gathering of information and preparation of metrics reporting requirements.

5. Works closely with clients to make sure that all assignments are received, assigned, worked on and resolved to their satisfaction.

6. Provides guidance as necessary to management to avoid legally unsound decisions or plans and when changes in the law occur.

7. Handles own caseload of higher exposure / complex / specialized coverage litigation and non-litigation assignments, including: research, analysis, development of factual information, counsel and guidance on legal questions or issues, court appearances, law and motion, discovery, negotiations, trial preparation and trying cases.

May perform additional duties as assigned.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities

1. Senior level advanced knowledge of coverage theories, principles, practices and procedures of litigation management within an insurance organization.

2. Excellent verbal and written communication, negotiation and presentation skills.

3. Excellent negotiation, consultative and facilitation skills with the ability to effectively interact with all internal and external business partners.

4. Ability to exercise independent judgment, and to work with and maintain confidential and sensitive information.

5. Excellent analytical and problem solving skills, and senior level skill in managing ambiguous situations and issues.

6. Proven ability to take a proactive long-term view of business goals and objectives in order to achieve strategic business results.

7. Knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and other business-related software.

Education and Experience

1. Bachelor’s degree with JD, and admission to the bar of at least one state.

2. Typically a minimum of ten years of insurance company and/or law firm experience with a proven track record of results.

3. Typically a minimum of 10 years related litigation / trial experience and a minimum of 10 years of insurance coverage experience.
